How Changing Your Routine Prevents Injury

How Changing Your Routine Prevents InjuryWith my move to a brand-new clinic space, I’ve been reflecting on how much change can reinvigorate us. And when it comes to movement and exercise, change isn’t just refreshing—it’s protective.

Adaptation: The Double-Edged Sword

Our bodies are excellent at adapting. If you repeat the same movement patterns day after day, your muscles and joints adjust to cope. But there’s a catch – too much repetition can create imbalances.

Think of it like always sitting in the same chair. Eventually, your hips, back, and shoulders start to feel stiff in predictable places. Athletes experience this too – runners with knee pain, weightlifters with shoulder issues, or desk workers with lower back tension.

The Role of Change

By varying your movement, you reduce repetitive strain and keep your body balanced. That might mean alternating between running and swimming, introducing mobility drills into your training, or even just standing up from your desk every hour.

Sports massage supports this by improving circulation, releasing tension, and ensuring your muscles are ready for new challenges.

A Parallel with My Move

Just as my new clinic space offers clients a fresh environment for healing, new movements offer your body a chance to refresh. A different stretch, a varied exercise, or even just a new way of sitting can keep you moving pain-free.

The takeaway? Don’t get stuck in the same groove – sometimes, switching things up is the best injury prevention strategy of all. Stuck for ideas on how to switch things up? Maybe try a taster session of a class you’ve never taken. Maybe go for an experience, such as horse riding, or martial arts. Think outside the box and you may just find something you love.
