Reflect Before You Reset – How to Review Your Year of Movement

I personally don’t ascribe to strict resolutions just because it is a new year, but January often tempts us to jump straight into them anyway, but before you do, if you do, take a moment to look back. The key to creating a body that moves well, feels strong, and stays pain-free isn’t starting over, it’s reflecting on what’s already been working.

Start by asking yourself three simple questions:

  1. What types of movement brought me joy last year?
  2. Where did I feel most consistent?
  3. What fell away, and why?

You might realise that the months you felt strongest were when you took evening walks or committed to your weekly kickboxing classes. Or maybe life got in the way mid-year, and you noticed your knees started aching or your flexibility dropped. These insights show you exactly what to bring forward and what to adjust.

Make a note

Make a note after looking through your calendar, photos, or even social media for reminders of what you were doing throughout the year. Note any changes in your energy levels, pain, motivation, or mood.

Patterns

Once you see your patterns, you can plan better. If you loved outdoor movement, find ways to keep that going through winter, such as weekend walks at Bradgate Park or Burbage Common. If you lost your rhythm in the gym because it felt repetitive… we’ve all been there… perhaps your body is asking for variety.

Movement doesn’t need to be grand to matter, it just needs to be consistent. Reflect, refine, and move forward with awareness rather than obligation.
