Vitamin D: small habits, big winter wins

Vitamin D: small habits, big winter wins

In spring and summer, short bursts of midday sun on bare skin (face/arms/hands) can help your body make vitamin D. In the UK autumn and winter, sunlight is often too weak for reliable vitamin D production, plus we’re all bundled up! Typically you need about two hours of light exposure in the darker months, as opposed to just 15 minutes in the warmer months!

Two practical routes to support your levels now:

  1. Food first: oily fish, mushrooms, eggs, and foods fortified with vitamin D.
  2. Supplements: a simple daily vitamin D supplement may be appropriate – check with your GP or pharmacist, especially if you have specific health needs.

Why vitamin D matters:

  • Supports bone health (helps you absorb calcium)
  • Contributes to muscle function and strength
  • Can support mood, energy, sleep regulation, and cognitive function

If you’re feeling unusually low, flat, or fatigued, speak to your GP – sometimes a basic deficiency is part of the picture and it’s very fixable.

A reminder to be gentle with yourself this winter. Nourishing food, steady sleep, movement that feels good, and regular bodywork like massage all support your physical and emotional balance. Even five minutes of mindful breathing, stretching, or walking in natural light can do wonders for your body and mind. These consistent, simple choices build resilience and help you feel your best year-round.

Helping you move well for life – winter included.
