
Why Staying Active Matters More Than Ever
As December rolls in, bringing frosty mornings and long dark evenings, it’s all too tempting to hibernate. The sofa calls, the blankets beckon… well they do for me, and exercise motivation seems to vanish like the daylight. But at Astral Fitness Sports Massage, we want to remind you that movement in the colder months is just as vital as it is in the sunny ones – perhaps even more so.
When the temperature drops, muscles and joints can feel tighter and stiffer. Regular movement helps keep blood flowing, maintains mobility, and reduces the risk of injury. Jen and I, your talented sports massage therapists, see more clients struggling with tension and soreness in winter than at any other time of year, which is often due to being less active or spending more time sitting indoors.
The good news?
Staying active doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or long gym sessions. You can boost your circulation and keep your mobility up through what we like to call ‘movement snacks’. I’ve talked about these before, but it’s time for a reminder. These are short, 5-to-10-minute bursts of activity that fit easily into your day.
Try this – set a timer once an hour to stand, stretch, or do 10 squats. Roll your shoulders, twist your torso, or perform some gentle hip circles. A brisk walk around the block, a few yoga poses, or even dancing to your favourite festive song counts! Try to get more people at your place of work involved, like one of our clients, and then it becomes normal for everyone. If you forget, someone else won’t!
If you’re up for something bigger, winter walks in places like Bradgate Park or Burbage Common are wonderfully invigorating; crisp air, quiet paths, and that satisfying post-walk glow.

Your body loves consistency. Even a little daily effort helps you feel looser, more energised, and ready to enjoy the festive season without aches or stiffness.
