Your Neck - Know Your BodyYou think you know your own body, right? But how many times have you said ‘…I don’t know why this hurts…’ or the very common, ‘…I must have slept funny on it…’ and the one that makes me chuckle a little, ‘…that workout is making my muscles hurt, I won’t do that again!’
This week we are taking a quick look at your neck and how to look after it.

One of the most common issues Jen and I treat day to day involving the neck is a reduced range of movement, or ROM.

Your neck is home to more than 20 muscles to help it function properly, and even if one is little grumpy, then because of how frequently you need your neck, it can make your day uncomfortable.

Strengthen Your Neck

The best advice we can give to look after your neck is to strengthen it. But how, I hear you ask. Strength training your whole body will have a quick impact on your neck strength, but if that is not enough for you, google how to strengthen your deep neck flexors to get you started. These muscles help support your head when you are looking down at your phone, or even down at the chopping board in the kitchen. Next up, regular movement snacks will go a long way to help your neck stay supple and mobile. Try this quick routine right now-

  1. Push your chin down to your chest and lengthen your neck.
  2. Push your chin to the sky and jut your jaw forward to feel a stretch in the front of your neck.
  3. Bring your head back to neutral and now look over your right shoulder and then your left shoulder.

Exercises

There are many other exercises you can do, and this is just example of a quick routine to wake up your neck. If you really want to take care of your neck, get your back and shoulders strong too. And while you’re at it, get your whole body strong and feel great all over!

If you do not know where to start with your neck, please book in with Jen or myself and we can not only make it feel great, but guide you on what to do next.
