Progress to Strong & Capable BodyFiguring out how to become stronger once you have started on your fitness journey can be a little confusing at times. Flitting from one plan to another can make you feel like you’re giving your muscles enough feedback to grow and change, but actually the truth is a little more boring than that.

Progressive overload is key

This means working the same exercises over and again for a period of time, while increasing your reps or weight over that time. Then switch to a slightly different workout and do the same with that one. Six weeks is a good amount of time to stick to one workout plan. But what if you are doing a sport, like kickboxing or horse-riding? Well, you continue to learn different skills with those sports, but there will come a time when you need to give your muscles a little bit more input to grow and become ‘bullet proof’ for your choice of activity. For example, dynamic kettlebell flows are an excellent support workout for kickboxing.

Pilates is a good all rounder to support horse-riding, as well as weightlifting that incorporates adductor exercises. Think about what needs to be stronger to make you more efficient or capable at your sport and design a program to support it. Not sure how to go about choosing the right exercises to support you? Jen and I have a wealth of experience in exercising, and prescribing exercises to those in need, and can point you in the right direction.
