Perimenopause and MenopauseJen and I have been having a lot of conversations lately around Perimenopause and Menopause, primarily because we have both started to experience some of the myriad of symptoms that can be experienced during perimenopause. As therapists though, it has piqued our interest in how going through the perimenopause can significantly impact how women feel in their bodies from a skeletal and muscular point of view. It is a field of interest we intend to study more over the coming year so that we can better advise our female clients when they come in with seemingly unrelated issues, and joining the dots can seem an impossible task.

For one example, it is very common for perimenopausal women to experience both trochanteric bursitis and plantar fasciitis as the same time, because they stem from an issue in a commonly undertrained area, the glutes, which can be negatively effected by the perimenopausal hormonal changes.

Perimenopause and Menopause

The other little fact about perimenopause that really caught our attention, is that resistance training has been shown in studies to reduce night sweats and other symptoms by at least 44% over a twelve week period. The caveat with the training is that the resistance must be at least 16kg and three times a week for 30 minutes.

Isn’t that simply amazing? Women literally have the power to drastically change their symptoms with the introduction of weight training. And as 51% of the population will go through perimenopause, and 49% of the population will know and support someone going through it, it is imperative that we all know what can be done to help. Watch this space as Jen and I become more knowledgeable about perimenopause and can help support you, man or woman, with the effects it can have on your life.
