PerimenopauseAt the end of last month, I touched briefly on the subject of perimenopause, and I would like to revisit the subject for February’s blogs and how it can impact a woman’s musculoskeletal health and how sports massage can help with those symptoms. This is very relevant reading for both men and women.

You might remember that I said that 51% of the population will go through menopause, with 49% of the population either living with, or working with, someone going though perimenopause – the period of time leading up to menopause.

Menopause actually lasts just one day, because it is the term used when it has been one whole year since menstruation. The average age for this occurring is 51, but it is the time before menopause is where it gets interesting. Perimenopause is the length of time before menopause and can last for years, somewhere between two years and up to twelve years, and there are a range of symptoms to deal with during that time. In our jobs as Sports Massage Therapists, the part that Jen and I become interested in when it comes to perimenopause, is how it effects your muscles and your joints, and how we can best support you during that time.

Some common symptoms that massage can help alleviate are-

  • Bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Dry skin

If you, or someone you know, is going through perimenopause, then massage could be just the thing to help them get a handle on some of their symptoms, as well as having a regular check in on how they’re faring each month.

Check back next week for more detail on how we would go about helping each of the above named symptoms and another clue about how to go about helping them.
Get yourself or your loved one booked in at www.astralfitness.co.uk and if you’re likely to need more regular treatments than monthly, Jen has the availability to help you.

Thank you for taking time to read this week’s blog – Perimenopause.
